The future of the profession of architecture

One of the most intriguing things about architecture as a profession is that architects hardly ever agree on what it is, architecture, where it came from and which of its parameters will matter in the future. The approaches, ambitions and aims within each generation differ to such an extent that they can be called contrary. Each new generation of architects tries to reinvent it, extend its boundaries, resettle it in the context and on the ashes of the past. This yields a rich and stimulating discussion about architecture. This likewise displays the boundaries and infinite potential within the profession and this is probably the main driving force for the enthusiasm that we all share.

Some call the epoch we live in a era of ‚globalisation‘, some call it the ‚age of information‘, some call it a time of ‚crisis‘. Either way its potential - both negative and positive - is game-changing. We are confronted with conditions that did not exist a decade ago. In our schools, often enough we are trained for conditions of the last millenium. We are learning within structures of previous generations that have not had to address the massive changes we are faced with now. We are at the point of re-evaluating what we have learned in the face of what we see - beyond the faculty building.
On the other hand, architecture still revolves around the dimensions and behavioral patterns of the human body, which have not changed significantly since the first human dwelling. Our eyes and ears are still capable of percieving the same wavelength of light and sound. For many people (e.g. Koolhaas) the Parthenon in Athens is still the ‚best‘ building on earth and the production of brilliant architecture does not seem to match the speedy progression of technology or the development of ‚civilisation‘. What are the defining parameters of ‚good‘ architecture and how much does it depend on a cultural or historic context?

Terms like ‚architect of 9/11‘, ‚chip architecture‘, the ‚architect of the presidential campaign‘ are in daily use. In the naming of the organisation of complex events or constructs, nothing seems to fit better than architecture‘. Are all these people architects or is architecture on the contrary rather a abstract notion of building, creation and organisation, and just in certain cases about building ‚buildings‘? Are architects able to do more than houses? What are their actual core abilities? discovering problems and potentials? Reinterprete, create and propose what has not been before? What then becomes the realm of the architect?

We come from all over europe, we do not share a common history but we do share a notion of 'architecture' and its future. This variety of backgrounds will serve as fuel for the discussions, which will result in proactive manifestos during the workshop which will be held at the university of Liechtenstein.

Date: 22OCT09
Start: 930
All students of easa and all students of the Hochschule were invited to the workshop.

"XL, L, M, S, FL"

With the exhibition we try to explore the potential of the unique variety of backgrounds that come together in a single place during the INCM. We requested 40 approaches to one theme, 40 points of views on one spot and 40 statements about Liechtenstein (FL).

While everyone knows his own country very well, a deep investigation of Liechtenstein is unrealistic. However participants understand one of the most dominant parameters of Liechtenstein, its dimension, 27km x 5km x 2 km. Use your intuition, imagination, your skills of visual communication and insert your country here! Squeeze it, shrink it, melt it, rip it off and reassemble it in the size of Liechtenstein. Photoshop, draw a plan, build a model and compose one strong A1. Represent your country in a public exhibition in one of the most exciting cultural spaces of the region, in the heart of Liechtenstein, the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.

Day Two:
Day Two of this years INCM will definitly be a night to remember. After discussing the role of the NC within the Network and all its elements, the EASA History Night was a wonderfull moment, but as usual, we cannot describe it with words. We were just sitting there, thinking, wow-and we are part of this wonderfull idea of a Network for european architecture students, that has been living on since almost 30 Years? COOL! One of the Founders of the Liverpool Workshops, Geoff Haslam was visiting us in Liechtenstein. He has been texting Richard Murphy and told us, that Richard is a bid jealous for not being here with us. Next time we want both!
Alright?

RÄGASCHIARM Issue 7

The fastest EASA bid discussion ever and that is a EASArecord! This is only reflecting the good team spirit that is among all the participants.
Thanks to all the Teams, Macedonia, Denmark and Germany for the great work!

We should have just cancelled the "end" of the event and pretended that you have to stay here with us.We miss you!
But it's already too late. In order to forget (or not to forget), we work and write: studies, rägaschiarms, dvds, exhibition and final report!

16-24OCT09 INCM (FL), 24-26OCT09 SWISSTRIP (CH)

After 26 years of being a lost country, Liechtenstein joined easa for the first time in Greece 2007 , and finally managed to fill its quota in Ireland 2008. Inspired by this amazing experience, easa Liechtenstein and easa Switzerland have decided to join forces and spirit in order to propose the first easa-event ever in this very little Country in the middle of a very big Europe: INCM009 Liechtenstein.

This years Intermediate National Contact Meeting shall throw light on the moment easa came into being, its development through to the present day and yield couragous ideas for its future. One of the founders of easa and a main organizer of the easa on a train will join our discourse on what easa actually is and where it could go.

We are europe's next generation of architects. Soon we will be thrown into a rapidly changing reality, requested to propose spatial structures and shape the future of the human environment. Yet regarding approaches in the current landscape of our profession, it is impossible to say what it actually is, the architect. We will dare to ask the question and initiate a discussion about the future of the profession of architecture during a workshop and a symposium.

We will spend our first week in the culture and landscape of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Your contrubuted poster will be exhibited in the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. We will among other things eat cheese-fondue high in the mountains, celebrate in a chalet and work in the Hochschule Liechtenstein.
Finally we will travel to the oldest city of Switzerland, Chur, and continue our work with a symposium. We'll party and sleep in a Bunker, visit the most amazing pieces of architecture of the region and complete the INCM009-experience night-bathing in the Thermes of Vals.

I N C M
The Intermediate National Contact Meeting

The INCM is held every year in october/november. They are the main event next to the assembly to keep the continuity of easa. There have been such memorable meetings like Berlin 1990, where the "Lichterfelde statement" was made. Out of the "Lichterfelde statement" the easa-guide developped, which is updated yearly at the NC-meetings.

E A S A
European Architecture Students Assembly

EASA was established in the early 80's, when students of architecture from Liverpool invited their fellow students from Europe to come and help them solve problems in their city. About 300 students gathered to work on the theme 'starting up the easa experience'. Since that work was successful, the experiment was taken up the next year again. Since then there has been an Assembly in different countries with 400 to 500 participants each year.
